Unearthed is a graphic novel about a girl who is part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program, living in a fictional town with an active anti-immigrant political debate. She is the only child in a family of undocumented immigrants. With college applications and an internship on her shoulders, the protagonist feels stress from every direction. Enter in a few Aztec Gods to play the devil on her shoulder and you have a very serious story about how immigration issues can affect those around us.
Immigration has been a hot topic of debate, especially during the last presidency. This book expresses the emotions of an individual at risk for deportation. It shows the reader another side of a story they may not be personally experiencing. It also covers the topic of college, and being a perfect only child with all the responsibility of the world on your shoulders.
This graphic novel was not an easy breezy beach read, but a story with more substance. This book is for teens who wish to know more about immigration, politics, and the welfare of others. A quick read, but an effective one.
