"Groups offer needy Thanksgiving warmth": For many area residents, the bounty of Thanksgiving would be only a dream were it not for the network of local churches and social service groups that provide a Thanksgiving basket for the needy, elderly and bedridden. At Mendham United Methodist Church this evening, the first community Thanksgiving service sponsored by the Interchurch of the Mendhams will accept offerings of canned goods and boxed items. The 8 p.m. interfaith service is open to all community residents. Food items collected will be distributed through the Morris County Board of Social Services which, after receiving permission from potential recipients, deliver Thanksgiving baskets via volunteers. 'We find it difficult to get deliveries to areas such as Oak Ridge and Stirling, but with local assistance and with the cooperation of social workers, the needy in these areas are taken care of,' said Hester Dawson, spokeswoman for the social services board. 'The churches make up the baskets, but since we have no budget for the delivery, it is done purely through the kindness of volunteers.' Parsippany residents will be the main recipients of food items collected during the annual Thanksgiving eve service at the United Methodist Church of Parsippany. 'There is an ongoing collection of food for the needy through the Morris County Food Pantry, but at specific times of the year. Thanksgiving for example, certain times are earmarked for collection by each church,' explained the Rev. Glenn Pursel. 'A listing is put out so that we can respond effectively to whatever item is most needed. This year it's peanut butter and crackers.' Temple Hatikvah in Flanders called for community cooperation in the collection of food items Sunday at its ecumenical community Thanksgiving celebration. Other area churches involved in food collections this Thanksgiving are St. Virgil's Church, Morris Plains, Church of the Assumption, Morristown, Mount Fern United Methodist Church, Randolph, St. Therese's Church, Succasunna, and St. Thomas More Church, Convent Station." ---Daily Record [Morristown, N.J.], November 23, 1983 (p. 15)
