Wednesday, February 11, 2026: El Cantar de mio Cid: The Song of the Cid
This is medieval Spain's greatest epic poem, a foundational work of Spanish literature about the national hero Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as El Cid. It recounts his exile, battles against the Moors, amassing of wealth, and his ultimate quest to restore his honor and family's standing, particularly after his daughters are shamefully mistreated by their noble husbands. The poem blends history and legend, focusing on themes of honor, loyalty, and merit, and his the oldest surviving Spanish epic.
