Six Crimson Cranes is a novel about a princess forging her own path in life. Destined to be married to a prince from another land, this princess will do anything to escape her fate, even learn magic from a dragon. With the addition of an evil stepmother, and a magic curse that stops her from speaking, this novel is a fairy tale influenced by Asian myth. The adventure this character takes is not a simple one, and delves into the topics such as the sacrifices we make for family, and that not everyone is who they seem.

I enjoyed this novel for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, the story is engaging and is constantly moving, there is never a dull chapter. Secondly, the character understands she has a predetermined path in life and is strong enough to fight it. She never falls the ground in pieces complaining about fate, she fights for what she wants. Finally, although it has the elements of a classic fairy tale, you cannot guess the ending or even what is going to happen next, which is a lovely surprise.

Elizabeth Lim is an author of several other series, includes two novels in Disney’s Twisted Tales series. If you enjoy a story about what happens when fairy tales don’t go as planned, I would keep an eye on this author, and others such as Naomi Novik and Nicki Pau Preto.
