The Daughter of Ys is a Breton Fairy Tale retold in the form of a graphic novel. This fairytale talks about the Kingdom of Ys and how it was created. In this tale you meet two sisters, the elder who prefers to live with nature, and the younger who is of a more royal and political mindset. Ys is a kingdom that lies within the water, with a great wall magically built to keep the sea waters away. This is a cautionary tale about the cost of magic and what befalls those who dabble in it.

This is not a bright and sunny graphic novel, it has a more dark and bold color scheme. The story itself is dark as well, filled with evil of several types. It covers topics such as the loss of a parent, the cost of magic, a misguided king, and what happens if evil is let loose. I cannot say this was my favorite story to read, but I am happy that I was introduced to a fairy tale that I was unfamiliar with before. This is a graphic novel for fans of dark fantasy, and who don’t mind having an unreliable protagonist.
