Jani wants desperately to leave Durc with her sister, Zosa, and the famous and magical Hotel Magnifique could be their key out. Zosa, a gifted singer, auditions for the Hotel and receives an offer of employment, and while Jani does not, that won't stop her from going anyway. Once there, the Hotel is alarmingly beautiful, and full of the type of magic that is forbidden outside its walls. Jani is in awe, until the cruelty of the staff and their Hotel is revealed, and the facts stop adding up. Aided by Bel, the mysterious and alluring doorman with secrets of his own, Jani needs to figure out what's really going on before it's too late, and her contract with the Hotel is extended-forever.

Hotel Magnifique by Emily J. Taylor is a fast-paced fantasy with elements of mystery and adventure. This story is built on Jani's relationship with Zosa, and the fierce lengths she will go to to protect her sister. Their relationship is not without its flaws, but Taylor does an excellent job of making their love and friendship feel authentic, adding to the urgency of the plot. The magic in the story adds whimsy and danger, and the characters' (and readers') understanding of its complexity grows as the novel progresses. A bit of romance ups the stakes, but is not a central plot focus. Recommended for those who want a one-shot fantasy story that they can't help but read in one sitting.
